Anima / Animus

Ambiguous feelings and complex behaviors don’t just come from the shadow. The inner feminine or masculine also plays a role.

Each gender holds the opposite within itself, men have their inner feminine, and women have their inner masculine, which we later call the soulmate.

It’s as if, when humans were divided into men and women, part of masculinity was hidden in women’s psyche and part of femininity in men’s, so they would complement each other.

The soulmate is shaped by our childhood relationships with parents, girls by their fathers, and boys by their mothers. In childhood, parents are like gods, but as we grow, their grandeur fades, leaving an unclear, godlike image in our unconscious. This influence shows up in adult relationships. Impulsive marriages, unsuccessful relationships, love at first sight, or dislike of the opposite sex are all negative effects of this hidden image. The soulmate also influences our emotions, reactions, and motivations, like insecurity, emptiness, violence, doubt, recklessness, and hidden thoughts. It’s his voice saying, “You’re hopeless, what’s the point? Life won’t get better.”
